Our extra-curricular highlights
Children’s University Newcastle (CU)
This program is open to all primary students who love to learn. Students involved in Children’s University Newcastle (CU) are encouraged to explore new learning opportunities and discover educational events and experiences they can engage with at home, in their local community, and across the region. Through CU, children can connect with learning activities offered throughout Australia, helping to inspire curiosity, creativity, and a love of lifelong learning.
Student Voice - Student Representative Council (SRC)
The Student Representative Council (SRC) empowers students to take on leadership roles and actively contribute to school decision-making.
Representatives from each grade meet regularly to discuss initiatives, share student perspectives, and support community projects.
Through this, the SRC promotes active citizenship, collaboration, and a strong sense of school pride. The SRC helps students develop confidence, communication, responsibility, and leadership skills that extend beyond the classroom.
Cultural Activities
We offer targeted initiatives for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander identified students, providing opportunities to participate in cultural activities that strengthen identity, build connections, and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. These initiatives may include Yidaki (boys’ didgeridoo group), boys’ and girls’ dance groups, weaving workshops, and, for senior students, participation in our Junior AECG (Aboriginal Education Consultative Group), where students discuss the significance of cultural events and contribute their voice to school matters.
Alongside these targeted initiatives, all students from preschool to Year 6 participate in inclusive cultural learning experiences that promote understanding, respect, and appreciation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. These programs encourage students to connect, express themselves, and celebrate culture in a supportive and engaging environment.
Primary Schools Sports Association (PSSA) Competitions
Where available, students the opportunity to take part in Primary Schools Sports Association (PSSA) competitions. This program allows skilled athletes to represent their school in selected sports, which can vary from year to year, and may include activities such as soccer, netball, or athletics. PSSA provides pathways to zone, regional, and state levels, with a focus on skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Participation offers valuable experiences for students who are keen to extend their sporting interests beyond the school level.
Debating
Debating is a fun and interactive way for students to develop their speaking and listening skills. It sparks curiosity and sharpens thinking, while encouraging students to express their opinions, think critically, and respect the viewpoints of others in a supportive environment. Students take part in friendly debates on engaging topics, helping them build confidence, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Debating also fosters a love for public speaking and healthy discussion. This opportunity is typically available to our primary students in Year 5 and 6.
Lunchtime Activities and Clubs
At our school, all K–6 students are encouraged to join a range of lunchtime clubs and activities that run throughout the year. Students can be part of our Eco-Warriors Garden Club, helping to care for our fruit and vegetable garden by weeding, planting, watering, and harvesting. For those who enjoy a calm and creative space, Art Club and Passive Play offer opportunities to unwind, reflect, and express themselves through different artistic media in a supportive environment. Students can also take part in Chess Club, where they learn the game and develop strategic thinking, or join in structured playground games led by experienced teachers who coach, referee, and encourage teamwork and sportsmanship. The library is also open at lunchtimes, providing a welcoming space for students to read, explore resources, and make use of our laptops for learning and creativity. These activities give every student the chance to connect, explore their interests, and enjoy their break times in meaningful ways.
